Living with the pain and fatigue brought on by MS can be debilitating. At the same time, sifting through treatment options can quickly cause frustration and anxiety.

In contrast, red light therapy emerges as an alternative pain management therapy available at Light Lounge, providing a beacon of hope for MS patients. Discover how integrating red light therapy into your MS treatment plan can offer relief from the debilitating symptoms associated with Multiple Sclerosis.

Red Light Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Almost 1 million people in the United States are living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a neurodegenerative disease.1

MS is a condition in which a person’s immune system turns against the central nervous system. This causes a breakdown of the protein and fat structure called the myelin sheath, which protects the nerves around the brain and spinal cord. The breakdown can lead to chronic inflammation and miscommunication between the brain and the rest of the body.

The symptoms of MS are notably unpredictable and vary widely from one individual to another, making MS a particularly complex condition to manage. The variability means that what works for one person in terms of symptom relief might not work for another.

Finding the right treatment may require a customized plan to alleviate your symptoms.

  • Fatigue: Fatigue in MS can be so severe that it significantly interferes with daily activities, making even simple tasks feel impossible.
  • Impaired vision: This often manifests as blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision, usually in one eye at a time, due to damage to the optic nerve.
  • Stiffness or weakness in muscles: Muscle stiffness (spasticity) and weakness can affect any part of the body, leading to difficulties with movement and coordination.
  • Mobility issues: Mobility problems may range from needing a walking aid to being wheelchair-bound, as balance and muscle coordination are impacted.
  • Numbness, tingling or pain: These sensory symptoms can occur anywhere in the body and range from mild to severe, often described as a pins-and-needles sensation or a sharp, stabbing pain.

These symptoms can impact any area of the body and are often difficult to predict, making them even more frustrating. Over time, the effects of MS can significantly worsen a person’s quality of life.

Treatment for MS

Most medications for multiple sclerosis are designed to either prevent the immune system’s attack – specifically by T-cells – on the nervous system’s myelin sheath or to hasten the nervous system’s recovery after such attacks. The attack process involves T-cells being attracted to the myelin sheath by proteins known as cytokines.

These common treatments aim to reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups, manage symptoms, and slow the progression of the disease.

Corticosteroids for MS treatment are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs used to reduce nerve inflammation and manage acute flare-ups, aiming to decrease the severity and duration of attacks.

Pros:

  • Can shorten the duration of relapses
  • Helps manage severe symptoms rapidly
  • Quickly reduces inflammation during MS exacerbations

Cons:

  • Does not slow the progression of MS over time
  • May cause mood swings, increased risk of infection, and weight gain
  • Long-term use can lead to serious side effects including osteoporosis, hypertension, and diabetes2

Plasma exchange (plasmapheresis) for MS treatment involves removing and replacing the plasma in a patient's blood, aimed at eliminating harmful immune system components that contribute to MS flare-ups.

Pros:

  • May improve symptoms of severe MS relapses more quickly
  • Can be effective for those who don’t respond to corticosteroids
  • Targets the immune system’s components directly involved in the MS attack

Cons:

  • Requires access to specialized medical facilities
  • Not effective as a long-term treatment strategy for MS
  • Can lead to temporary side effects like low blood pressure and light-headedness

Red Light Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Managing MS Symptoms

Recently, an increasing number of studies have seen promising results of red light therapy for MS treatment. For example, a 2016 study found that red light therapy reduced inflammatory cells in the central nervous system and prevented damage to the myelin.3

Red light therapy is recognized for its minimal side effects, presenting a promising option for treating MS. Unlike conventional treatments, red light therapy offers a gentle, non-invasive approach that makes it a low-risk option for individuals who are concerned with the unwanted effects of traditional methods.

Red light therapy may help alleviate MS symptoms in the following ways:

  • Reducing inflammation: Red light therapy has been shown to inhibit inflammatory cytokines and release anti-inflammatory mediators. Since MS involves chronic inflammation in the central nervous system, red light therapy’s anti-inflammatory properties can help alleviate MS pain.
  • Pain relief: MS often causes neuropathic pain because of the damage to nerves. Red light therapy can help modulate nerve function and target underlying neuropathic mechanisms.
  • Better cellular health: Red light therapy stimulates the mitochondria and boosts production of ATP, which can help the cells heal more quickly and perform their functions more effectively.

Studies suggest that red light therapy can help reduce muscle stiffness and regenerate the body’s cells and tissues. These effects directly combat the negative symptoms of MS, providing needed relief for individuals living with this condition.

When light that is in the red, near infrared, and infrared spectra is applied to the body, inflammation and pain are decreased, and healing is accelerated. Light therapy does this by reducing excessive oxidative stress at the cellular level with no documented nor reported negative side effects.

From folks who are suffering from chronic pain (light therapy can alleviate pain without drugs) to people who want to get more out of their training (light therapy can help increase performance and decrease recovery time).

This place has been HUGE for my recovery as an athlete and for just general health and wellness. I even sprained my ankle and they used their handheld laser to speed up my recovery, which I was amazed how well it worked. I definitely recommend adding Light Lounge to your weekly wellness routine!

What an incredible experience! I’ve been dealing with inflammation all over my body for a year due to diet, stress, and injury. A quick, relaxing treatment left me on cloud nine- similar to the hot yoga high! Throughout the day, I felt more relaxed, was able to take deeper breaths, and noticed certain annoying pains in my body disappear. Additionally, Laura & Dan truly care about what they are bringing to the community. You’ll be greeted with warmth and kindness, taken on a tour of their beautiful facility, and will receive guidance in deciding which red light treatment option is best for you (stress relief, inflammation, & so much more) Their passion and knowledge is unmatched. Definitely give them a try, your well-being is totally worth caring for!
  • Ryan C.
Fantastic experience. Looking forward to more!
  • Geoff A.
My wife and I are both avid cyclists and runners here in Denver. But over the years, that has definitely taken a toll on my knees and back. I was talking to my brother recently and he told me about red light therapy. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about the whole thing. But we decided to give it a shot because we both know how detrimental that inflammation can be. After meeting Dan and Laura, we were instantly at ease and willing to try it out. It was INCREDIBLE… and best of all, no drugs or shots or pills to mask the pain. I recover quicker. I sleep better. And because of that, I’m less stressed. I honestly believe that the therapy combined with the trust we have in the owners has helped both of us in our workout recovery. We plan on taking this new found energy and putting it right back into the workout. Thanks Dan and Laura!
  • John P.

  • Clinton A.
Red light therapy sounds a bit unusual until you realize how much money the NFL and other multi-billion dollar sports industries have invested in it. I also like to choose businesses that deserve my money. With Dan I know he genuinely cares and wants to make our lives better. This isn't just business to him.
  • Eric H.
I was skeptical about red light therapy but this really helped with my anxiety and carpel tunnel. The place is super clean and inviting with a knowledgeable staff.
  • Liza A.
I'm so happy I found this place. The RLT is amazing for post work out recovery and my skin is looking a lot healthier as well.
  • Kim S.
I have been suffering with shoulder and neck pain for several weeks. I stopped in at the Light Lounge and was incredibly impressed by the expertise and knowledge that Dan shared with me as we toured the studio. Dan and Laura have made the Light Lounge a clean, relaxing and soothing environment to heal in, and it is obvious that they have a strong community focus. I'm happy to report that after just a couple of sessions my pain has lessened immensely!
  • Eric P.
You can instantly tell that Dan and Laura care deeply about spreading wellness and joy to the world. Their facility is beautifully and thoughtfully maintained. Red light therapy is a wonderful drug free and non invasive way to treat pain, boost energy and improve mood. Their equipment is state of the art. It would be impossible to replicate in the home. The convenience of popping in for a full body 15 minute treatment makes it simple to incorporate into your daily routine. This is the closest thing to a fountain of youth I have found in my middle age. My wife uses it to alleviate migraines and get better sleep at night. You owe it to your body to take advantage!! Thank you Dan and Laura for bringing this to our community. I know the journey was not easy.
  • Fran M.
I love this place and the entire team! Always so helpful and friendly. Red Light/cold laser therapy is so beneficial for so many health related things. I don’t want to be without it!
  • Chris L.
I tried this place out on a whim while traveling and am I glad I did! I had read about red light therapy so when I had time to kill in Littleton and spotted Light Lounge on my maps app, I went for it. First off, this place is super clean and beautifully designed and furnished. It feels like a high end Scandinavian spa as soon as you walk in. I was greeted with a smile by Laura, one of the owners, and shown some materials explaining the benefits of RLT. I've never been to a tanning bed, but it feels like a similar setup - but with different kind of light. There are private rooms with doors that lock, so it feels totally comfortable and safe to strip down and let the machine do its thing. I chose to cover my eyes with some little protectors they gave me, but I peeked and it didn't actually bother me or hurt my eyes at all. After about twenty minutes, I was all done. This all was toward the end of a long business trip for me, so had been feeling a little run down. After my session, I didn't really feel different at first, but that night I slept SO well in my hotel, which I never do. I'm sure one session won't have a big effect, but can definitely see how this would have some amazing long term benefits. It was just really relaxing and my body definitely responded. I just wish there was one closer to me!
  • Theresa S.

  • Brennan C.
What a fantastic place! I absolutely love going to Light Lounge to heal, relax and rejuvenate. I truly never feel better than after a red light therapy session. The establishment is clean, welcoming, and peaceful, while the owners are kind, understanding, and knowledgeable.
  • Tony W.
Really therapeutic technology experience for my whole family! Recommend a few times a week at a minimum for maximum effectiveness. Thanks again Dan!
  • Carolyn W.
This place is great! The owners and front desk are super knowledgeable and kind. They make your session simple with step by step instructions. The experience is very relaxing. It’s not hot or uncomfortable in any way. The beds don’t close all the way so there are zero feelings of claustrophobia. I can’t wait for my next session! Highly recommend.
