Understanding Skin Aging

Skin, the body’s largest organ, serves as a barrier protecting us from our environment. It shields our internal organs from harm, regulates body temperature, and provides sensory information. Given its constant exposure to sunlight, pollutants, and the natural process of aging, it’s not surprising that our skin undergoes changes over time.

Wrinkles, discoloration, spider veins, and reduced elasticity are all natural signs of aging. These changes are a testament to the life we’ve lived and the experiences we’ve had.

Aging skin is not just a surface-level phenomenon but occurs on a molecular level. Over time, the cells in our skin slow down, leading to a decrease in collagen and elastin production - two proteins essential for skin’s firmness and elasticity.

The cumulative damage from other harmful outside factors such as UV radiation and lifestyle choices can lead to DNA damage in skin cells, further accelerating the aging process.

While aging cannot be completely stopped, we can embrace aging while maintaining skin health. Healthy skin boosts our overall well being, enabling us to face the world with confidence.

By nurturing our skin with the right care and adopting a lifestyle that supports its vitality, we can ensure that we look good and feel good at the same time.

How Red Light Therapy Works: A Step-by-Step Process

Here is a detailed breakdown of how red light therapy works on a cellular level to rejuvenate skin during a photofacial or other targeted treatments:

The therapy begins with exposing the targeted body area to red and/or near-infrared light. This light is emitted at specific wavelengths, generally ranging from 630 to 670 nanometers for red light and 810 to 850 nanometers for near-infrared light. These wavelengths are chosen because they penetrate the skin at varying depths.1

It's important to note that the efficacy of red and near-infrared light therapy can depend on various factors, including the specific condition being treated, the duration of exposure, and the intensity of the light.

Professional devices used in clinics, like those at Light Lounge, are designed to deliver light at these optimal wavelengths to ensure the most effective treatment outcomes.

Once the red light reaches the targeted cells, it is absorbed by the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell. This absorption process is crucial for the treatment's therapeutic effects.

The absorbed light energy induces an increase in ATP (energy) production, enhancing the cell’s functioning and metabolism.2 This process is akin to photosynthesis in plants but occurs within human cells.

The increase in cellular energy supports various healing processes within the body. It promotes the repair and regeneration of damaged cells, reduces inflammation, and increases circulation by stimulating the formation of new capillaries.

Furthermore, red light therapy helps in reducing oxidative stress within cells, which is often a cause of chronic inflammation and cellular damage.3 By mitigating oxidative stress, the therapy aids in preventing and reversing cellular damage.

The Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Your Skin

Now that we have an understanding of how red light therapy works within our cells, it’s time for the exciting part. How can it benefit my skin?

Red light therapy, a gentle and non-invasive treatment approach, has emerged as a remarkably effective method for enhancing both the health and appearance of skin in several key ways:

  • Reduction of Inflammation, Redness, and Acne: Red light therapy is particularly effective in reducing inflammation and redness, offering immense benefits for conditions like rosacea and acne. It not only targets the bacteria responsible for acne outbreaks but also aids in healing acne scars, leading to clearer and more even-toned skin.5
  • Enhancement of Skin Texture, Tone, and Scar Healing: Regular sessions of red light therapy contribute to a smoother, more even skin texture and tone by boosting collagen and elastin production. This process helps fill in fine lines and wrinkles and improves the appearance of scars, including keloid scars, making them less noticeable.6
  • Protection Against UV Damage and Support for Healing: Exposure to red light strengthens the skin's defense against UV-induced damage7 and supports the healing of burn injuries by reducing inflammation and promoting faster tissue repair. This results in quicker recovery times and minimized scarring.
  • Support for Pigmented Lesions and Psoriasis: Individuals with vitiligo may find red light therapy helpful in encouraging pigment production, thereby reducing the visibility of white patches. Additionally, it offers relief from psoriasis symptoms by reducing the scale, thickness, and redness of psoriatic plaques, enhancing skin appearance.8

From folks who are suffering from chronic pain (light therapy can alleviate pain without drugs) to people who want to get more out of their training (light therapy can help increase performance and decrease recovery time).

Clinical trials and 4000 laboratory studies demonstrate that light therapy (also called photobiomodulation) has no negative side effects. It has been proven to heal soft tissue injuries, help with TBI, relieve pain without using harmful drugs and painkillers. For more evidence based information please see our BLOG.

What an incredible experience! I’ve been dealing with inflammation all over my body for a year due to diet, stress, and injury. A quick, relaxing treatment left me on cloud nine- similar to the hot yoga high! Throughout the day, I felt more relaxed, was able to take deeper breaths, and noticed certain annoying pains in my body disappear. Additionally, Laura & Dan truly care about what they are bringing to the community. You’ll be greeted with warmth and kindness, taken on a tour of their beautiful facility, and will receive guidance in deciding which red light treatment option is best for you (stress relief, inflammation, & so much more) Their passion and knowledge is unmatched. • Geoff A.
My wife and I are both avid cyclists and runners here in Denver. But over the years, that has definitely taken a toll on my knees and back. I was talking to my brother recently and he told me about red light therapy. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about the whole thing. But we decided to give it a shot because we both know how detrimental that inflammation can be. After meeting Dan and Laura, we were instantly at ease and willing to try it out. It was INCREDIBLE… and best of all, no drugs or shots or pills to mask the pain. I recover quicker. I sleep better. And because of that, I’m less stressed. I honestly believe that the therapy combined with the trust we have in the owners has helped both of us in our workout recovery. We plan on taking this new found energy and putting it right back into the workout. Thanks Dan and Laura!

Red light therapy sounds a bit unusual until you realize how much money the NFL and other multi-billion dollar sports industries have invested in it. I also like to choose businesses that deserve my money. With Dan I know he genuinely cares and wants to make our lives better. This isn't just business to him.
  • Eric H.
I was skeptical about red light therapy but this really helped with my anxiety and carpel tunnel. The place is super clean and inviting with a knowledgeable staff.

I have been suffering with shoulder and neck pain for several weeks. I stopped in at the Light Lounge and was incredibly impressed by the expertise and knowledge that Dan shared with me as we toured the studio. Dan and Laura have made the Light Lounge a clean, relaxing and soothing environment to heal in, and it is obvious that they have a strong community focus. I'm happy to report that after just a couple of sessions my pain has lessened immensely!

You can instantly tell that Dan and Laura care deeply about spreading wellness and joy to the world. Their facility is beautifully and thoughtfully maintained. Red light therapy is a wonderful drug free and non invasive way to treat pain, boost energy and improve mood. Their equipment is state of the art. It would be impossible to replicate in the home. The convenience of popping in for a full body 15 minute treatment makes it simple to incorporate into your daily routine. This is the closest thing to a fountain of youth I have found in my middle age. My wife uses it to alleviate migraines and get better sleep at night. You owe it to your body to take advantage!! Thank you Dan and Laura for bringing this to our community. I know the journey was not easy.
  • Fran M.
I love this place and the entire team! Always so helpful and friendly. Red Light/cold laser therapy is so beneficial for so many health related things. I don’t want to be without it!
  • Chris L.
I tried this place out on a whim while traveling and am I glad I did! I had read about red light therapy so when I had time to kill in Littleton and spotted Light Lounge on my maps app, I went for it. First off, this place is super clean and beautifully designed and furnished. It feels like a high end Scandinavian spa as soon as you walk in. I was greeted with a smile by Laura, one of the owners, and shown some materials explaining the benefits of RLT. I've never been to a tanning bed, but it feels like a similar setup - but with different kind of light. There are private rooms with doors that lock, so it feels totally comfortable and safe to strip down and let the machine do its thing. I chose to cover my eyes with some little protectors they gave me, but I peeked and it didn't actually bother me or hurt my eyes at all. After about twenty minutes, I was all done. This all was toward the end of a long business trip for me, so had been feeling a little run down. After my session, I didn't really feel different at first, but that night I slept SO well in my hotel, which I never do. I'm sure one session won't have a big effect, but can definitely see how this would have some amazing long term benefits. It was just really relaxing and my body definitely responded. I just wish there was one closer to me!
  • Theresa S.

  • Brennan C.
