How the Synergistic Power of Light, Water, and Melatonin Can Prevent Dementia

Dementia is one of the most debilitating illnesses that humans can experience. Researchers investigated the effects of light on the protein hydrogels in single cells through biochemical, biophysical, and optical approaches. Bright lasers can alter the dynamics of the proteins without damaging the cell. It's identified that coherence of light and exposure of aqueous substrates may play a role in arresting phase separation. Light directly influences the cells' behavior, resulting in protein synthesis and structure. In the study, low-intensity lasers have been observed to penetrate the scalp and skull and could provide therapeutic benefits to manage dementia via the coherence of light.

Water

Water is another element that plays a significant role in regulating phase separation. An increase in hydration levels could optimize proteins' folding and prevent clumping, potentially preventing brain cell damage that leads to dementia development. However, the study highlighted that water's influence may not be potent and may have little to no effect on intracellular phase separation.

Melatonin

Another powerful element influencing phase separation is melatonin, a hormone produced in the pineal gland, widely known to regulate our circadian rhythm. In the study, the research group found that melatonin can modulate cellular function and regulate intracellular phase separation. It does so by enhancing the hydration of cells. The hydration changes the water component in cells and acts on the proteins' behavior. An increase in water content has been linked with successful protein folding, while low water content hinders this process. Therefore, melatonin's influence is far-reaching and can be used as fodder for treating dementia.
